AGENCIES, Sydney: It was a day on field that brought cheers for some and tears for others. In a first, India reached T20 World Cup final on Thursday after their last four clash against England was washed out in Sydney.
After the venue was rained out and without a ball being bowled in the semi-final, the Harmanpreet Kaur-led team qualified ahead of England because the team won all its matches in the group stage and finished on top of the respective group.
As per set rules in this format of the game, a minimum 10 overs per side are required for a result and with the weather worsening, the umpires called it off without a ball being played. Normally, five overs per side are needed to constitute a Twenty20 match, but the rules are different for ICC tournaments.
Although, the ICC declined Cricket Australia’s request to have a reserve day for the semifinals, it said extending the duration of “short and sharp” T20 World Cup wasn’t considered “feasible”.
With no reserve day, the highest-ranked teams from the two groups move into the final if play is not possible.
The decision in favour of India has been received quite well in India especially in the sports fraternity.
