ANINDITA ACHARYA, Kolkata: Those of who have watched the trailer of Love Aaj Kal Porshu and by now the film would definitely give some extra points to Arjun Chakrabarty. Don’t tell us that you weren’t surprised and in a pleasant way how the once-upon-a-time young man who played Gora in Gaaner Oparey toned up so well. And till this time, he wasn’t explored on the big screen this way. We mean, in a sexy kinda way.
But do you know how Pratim D Gupta, the director of Love Aaj Kal Porshu cast Arjun? Well, earlier Jisshu Sengupta was supposed to play the lead role but when he could not, Pratim was in search of a leading man. And he wanted a new pair for his film. “Whenever I cast an actor for my film, I go to their Instagram accounts. If I like any look from their Instagram accounts, I ask the stylist to replicate it for my characters. When I visited Arjun’s Instagram account, I saw he was into fitness and he has been doing so for a while. So, I thought to present him in such a way in the film,” said the Ahare Mon director.
Love Aaj Kal Porshu will mark the debut of Madhumita Sarkar — popularly known as Pakhi from the Bengali daily soap Bojhena Se Bojhena. Funnily enough, Pratim hasn’t watched a single episode of that serial. And later Pratim learnt that even Madhumita wanted to break away from the Pakhi image. And well, yes she did.
The love sequences between Madhumita and Arjun have grabbed eyeballs. And though Pratim admitted the actors had no issues with the love scenes given they were there in the script from the beginning, the director had to struggle a bit during the shot taking. “In Hollywood, there are relationship managers for such scenes. But here, we have to do within a limited budget and logistics. But I am happy they came out well,” said the Maacher Jhol maker.
For those who haven’t watched the film yet, we aren’t giving away the spoilers. But Paoli Dam (Kalki Maitra) is indispensable in the film. “She couldn’t have played the lead role in the film. But she understood the importance of the character. In Hollywood, important faces play brief but meaningful roles all the time. It’s high time we also start doing that,” said the filmmaker.
Now, Pratim’s Love Aaj Kal Porshu is about the lives of Abhishek-Tapsee, Abhiroop-Tripti, and Abhijit-Trina (all played by Arjun and Madhumita). And though he hasn’t split it into chapters like his previous films like Paanch Adhyay, Ahare Mon or Shaheb Bibi Golaam, it does have an episodic pattern. Well, Pratim smirked and said, “When I was making my debut film Paanch Adhyay, I wanted to follow Quentin Tarantino and thus split the film into chapters. But then, I guess, I automatically start following the structure when I sit down to write. Believe me, it’s all organic.”
