BH CORRESPONDENT, Kolkata: After Delhi, Uttar Pradesh, Chandigarh, Odisha, Maharashtra and Telangana, now West Bengal also makes masks mandatory while going out in public. On Sunday, Bengal registered 95 coronavirus positive cases.
On Sunday, the West Bengal government passed an order where it said, “Whereas it is critical to adopt all possible measures for saving people from exposure to coronavirus, whereas covering mouth and nose at all times helps prevention and transmission of the virus, whereas mouth and nose should be covered by facial masks or any other available piece of cloth which may even include a properly folded or rolled dupatta, gamcha, handkerchief or any such material that acts as a protective cover. Therefore it is hereby directed that it is mandatory to use this cover always, especially in public spaces.”
At a time when there’s a serious shortage of masks in the market, chief minister Mamata Banerjee has mentioned on multiple occasions the usage of piece of cloth as a protective cover. She herself uses a cotton cloth on multiple occasion. On Saturday’s video conference, Prime Minister Narendra Modi was seen using a white cloth as a protective gear and so was a number of chief ministers of other states including Mamata. The order was issued by chief secretary Rajiv Sinha.
Even celebrities have started encouraging and urging the people to use homemade masks.The Ministry of Health and Family Welfare has issued an advisory for the use of homemade reusable mask for those citizens not suffering from COVID-19 symptoms.
“Such people who are not suffering from medical conditions or having breathing difficulties may use the handmade reusable face cover, particularly when they step out of their house. This will help in protecting the community at large,” the advisory said.
