BH CORRESPONDENT, Mumbai: It’s no secret as the country fights coronavirus, its has taken a while for the rich and famous to come out with magnanimity. In fact, sports personalities and Bollywood icons have been under close scrutiny by social media followers who have trolled them for not participating in the effort.
The ploy has worked to some extent it seems. Cricketer Mahindra Singh Dhoni was trolled for his paltry contribution and his wife Sakshi took to social media trying to explain without success.
Meanwhile, a lot was expected from India’s richest cricketer duo — Virat Kohli and his actress-wife Anushka. The couple were quiet on this till now.
On Monday, the couple pledged their support to the PM-CARES Fund & the Chief Minister’s Relief Fund (Maharashtra) as the number of cases of coronavirus pandemic in the state crossed 200.
Anushka and I are pledging our support towards PM-CARES Fund & the Chief Minister’s Relief Fund (Maharashtra). Our hearts are breaking looking at the suffering of so many & we hope our contribution, in some way, helps easing the pain of our fellow citizens #IndiaFightsCorona
— Virat Kohli (@imVkohli) March 30, 2020
Kohli took to Twitter and said that the “suffering of so many” had left him and the Zero actress Anushka heartbroken and hoped that their contribution helps ease “the pain of our fellow citizens”.
However, Kohli hasn’t exactly specified the way he will support the initiative nor has he mentioned the figures (in case of a donation) or kind (masks, medicines, equipment etc) for the cause.
However, a source in the Bollywood industry close to the duo told news agency IANS that the couple have jointly donated Rs 3 crore towards the cause.
Other sportspersons and organisations like Hima Das, PV Sandhu, Sujan Mukherjee, Avishek Dalmiya, Cricket Association of Bengal have confirmed their respective commitments recently.
