BH CORRESPONDENT, Kolkata: Bengali film and television actor Santu Mukherjee breathed his last on Wednesday at around 7.30 pm at his South Kolkata residence. He was 69.
The veteran actor, who has worked with stalwarts like Tapan Sinha and Tarun Majumdar, was suffering from cancer. He is survived by two daughters- Swastika and Ajopa.
Swastika, who is a celebrated actress, had just returned from the shooting of her Bengali film Shrimati when the news broke. According to sources, the last rites will be performed on Wednesday at 11.45 pm at Keoratala.
Santu is an acclaimed name in the world of Bengali film and TV world. He has worked in popular TV serials like Ishti Kutum, Kusum Dola and Jol Nupur to name a few.
Apart from working in hardcore potboilers, Santu has worked in movies like Ganadevta, Kalankini Kankabati, Nyay Anyay, Raja and Harmonium.
Actress Sudiptaa Chakraborty expressed grief over the demise of the senior actor. Calling him the heartthrob and “moner manush”, she said he will be dearly missed.

Sabitri Chatyopadhya also remembered the time spent working with the veteran actor on Jol Nupur.
Actress Rituparna Sengupta had expressed her condolences too. “I have no words to explain what we have lost today! The great actor and human being Santu Mukherjee, Rests in cinema forever!,” she tweeted.

Arindam Sil wrote, “Santuda (#SantuMukherjee) leaves us too. Rest in Peace. Nostalgia floods my ability to say more. Bhalo theko.”
Meanwhile, West Bengal minister Arup Biswas went to the late actor’s residence.
A month ago, Santu, who was born on January 17, 1951, was hospitalized in Kolkata.
A Rabindra Sangeet singer, Santu even featured in the video of the album Amar Mukti Aloye Aloye, which comprises six Rabindra Sangeet sung by Swastika in memory of her mother.
