AGENCIES, Doha: The United States and the Taliban have signed a landmark deal on Saturday, which could result in the withdrawal of the troops from Afghanistan within 14 months.
If the deal matures, then it can lead to a dialogue between Kabul and Taliban goverment, thus ending the 20-year-long war.
At the signing ceremony in Doha, US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo was present along with Taliban deputy leader Mullah Baradar.
According to The New York Times, the withdrawal of American troops is dependent on the Taliban’s fulfillment of commitments especially the severance of ties with international terrorist groups such as Al Qaeda.
The US Embassy in Kabul tweeted, “Today is a monumental day for Afghanistan. “.. it is about making peace & crafting a common brighter future.” We stand with #Afghanistan. #AfghanPeaceProcess.”
