BH CORRESPONDENT, Ahmedabad: Why are American Presidents obsessed with Bollywood? More pointedly, with Shah Rukh Khan. And especially with his iconic film Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge.
US President Donald Trump mentioned the film in his speech at the Motera Stadium in Ahmedabad. Trump is in India on a two-day tour and will visit Agra and New Delhi as well. Praising the colour and vibrancy that Indian films offer, he said, “All take great joy in scenes of Bhangra and music, dance, romance and drama and classic Indian films like DDLJ and Sholay.”
This sent Shah Rukh’s fans into a tizzy with a lot of them taking to social media to celebrate the enduring success of a film that was released 26 years ago, and still does not fail to capture hearts with the ageless romance between the characters of Raj and Simran immortalized on screen by Shah Rukh and Kajol.
Yash Raj Films, which had produced DDLJ, responded with a witty remark. “DDLJ trumps!” read a post from their official Twitter handle.

However, Trump is not the first US President to have mentioned DDLJ. His predecessor Barack Obama also did the same in 2015 while addressing crowds at Delhi. He had said, “Senorita, baade baade desho mein… you know what I mean.”
Previously, Trump had surprised netizens by praising Ayushmann Khurrana’s film Shubh Mangal Zyada Saavdhan which deals with homosexuality and homophobia.
