BH CORRESPONDENT, Kolkata: Usne mujhe mara, pehli baar, nahi maar sakta, bas itni si baat hai. For a lot of us, it’s just a slap, but it shouldn’t be and Amrita (Taapsee Pannu) in Anubhav Sinha’s Thappad rises above all stereotype to become one of the most effective films in recent times.
We are sure a lot of you have watched this brilliant piece of cinema on the big screen but then, Amazon Prime Video has announced the digital premiere of the film today. Starting May 1, one can watch it on the OTT platform. Unfortunately, when the country is battling with coronavirus crisis, there’s a steep rise in number of domestic violence amid lockdown and the National Commission for Women (NCW) has said that women’s helplines have reported extremes rises in distress calls. Thappad is a film on a woman who is subjected to domestic violence, but then she fights it back like a lioness.
Thappad is a story of Amrita whose seemingly perfect life is shattered when her husband slaps her at a party. But is one slap enough to question what a relationship stands for? The film is a silent slap on our society’s age-old belief that — shaadi mein sab kuch chalta hain. The film re-evaluates and questions this norm.
The film also stars Ratna Pathak Shah, Tanvi Azmi, Pavail Gulati, Manav Kaul, Ram Kapoor, among others.
