AGENCIES, Dubai: Voicing strong opinions, especially negative ones, can go a long way to haunt the one who voices them. Singer Sonu Nigam is finding the truth of this statement as he was forced to deactivate his Twitter account as he faced severe backlash for some comments he made against the practises of Islam in 2017.
Currently stuck in Dubai due to the ongoing worldwide lockdown, he had to deactivate his account after some users brought up the fact that Sonu had voiced his displeasure at being woken up by Islamic morning prayer ‘azaan’ at 5 am in the morning. He said as he was not a Muslim, this was forced religiousness. He also said that in Prophet Muhammad’s time, there wasn’t any electricity, so why was he being forced to hear azaan through electronic devices.
Some netizens seems to have found this funny that the singer is now in Dubai and he couldn’t complain about hearing azaan in a Muslim country. One wrote, “Sonu Nigam has deactivated his twitter account whilst living in Dubai . guess he loves the sweet sound of the azaan now.” A more hardline netizen wished him to be put in a cell. She tweeted, “Now Sonu Nigam ! Drub him royally by putting him in a cell with a loudspeaker calling out the call for prayer 5 times a day.”
