BH CORRESPONDENT, Kolkata: Next time, you visit Pricep Ghat railway station in Kolkata, you will see a woman staff at the ticket counter. In fact, a total of six female employees will be in charge of Principe Ghat railway station from today onwards. On the occasion of International Women’s Day, the responsibility of this station of the Sealdah Division has been handed over to women by Indian Railways. Now, that’s some good news.
This unique initiative has been taken by the Eastern Railway on the International Women’s Day to honour the railway’s female staff. On Sunday, the Prinsep Ghat Station, which falls under the Sealdah Division of the Eastern Railway, was completely transformed into the first female-operated station. So, from the staff at the ticket counter to the station master, every responsibility will be taken care by women employees.
Nearly 29 trains run daily on this station. Suniti Poddar, one of the three station masters, said, “I was already posted at this station. But then all the other staff members were men. But today onwards, all-female members will be on charhe. It is a great feeling that we are being honoured in this way.”
Another employee, Liza Roy has been transferred to Prinsep Ghat station to take charge as the second station master. She said, “I have been working as a station master since long. But the department has transferred me here along with four others as this has become an all-women station from today onwards. For the first time such an initiative has been taken by Sealdah Division. I love being part of such a novel initiative. Hopefully, we will make it a better place for the commuters in the days to come.”
Eastern Railways has also taken the initiative of appointing an all-women team of cleaning staff at Prinsep Ghat Station. To add to the beauty of the Ganges, railways also have plans to hand over the security responsibilities of the station to the female employees.
