BH CORRESPONDENT, Kolkata: The Indian Post and Telegraph department has joined the battle against coronavirus by deciding to use its mail vans to deliver medicines, ventilators and other medical equipment to different parts of the country during the lockdown period.
As cargo flight operations resumed, the postal department started collecting medicines and other medical supply from airports and loaded them on the mail vans for door-to-door supply.
The department is also using railway parcel vans to deliver medicines and equipment. On Friday, the postal services sent two tonnes of medicines to Varanasi and Patna through the railway mail service.
Sources in the postal department said the number of letters and parcels to be delivered has decreased drastically during the lockdown period. The mail vans which were used to deliver parcels will now carry medicines and other medical goods to different parts of the country.
The postal department has also tied up with e-commerce companies to supply medicines at home. This has come as a boon for e-commerce companies as they now have access to the large network of the postal services.
