BH CORRESPONDENT, Kolkata: All attempts by the doctors at SSKM Hospital, Kolkata failed to keep hopes alive for Rishab Singh, who was critically injured in the pool car accident in Hooghly’s Polba.
Doctors treating Rishab , who was on ventilator since February 14, said that his condition worsened in the early hours of Saturday morning when he breathed his last. Doctors said infection was spreading fast from one vital organ to another as a result of which the Class II failed to respond to the medical treatment.
However, the condition of the other student — Dibangshu Bhagat — who was also critical and was hospitalised at the same hospital has improved considerably.
As Rishab’s condition began to deteriorate, hospital authorities called his family at night since his vital organs began failing. The medical team of specialists even considered dialysis as an option. The boy received 36 units of blood and plasma. But all their efforts went in vain as Rishab breathed his last at around 5 am on Saturday.
The accident took place on February 14, when the driver of a pool car of an English-medium school car in Polba, Hooghly lost control while speeding and fell into a water body after hitting a divider. The vehicle was carrying 14 students. All of them were moderately hurt with the exception of Rishab and Dibangshu who were drowned in muddy waters. They were brought to the SSKM Hospital through a green corridor for emergency treatment.
Rishab was immediately put on life support machine. Tracheostomy was also performed but the silt that went inside his lungs could not be extracted. As a result Rishab’s lungs got infected and he died on the eight day as the infection couldn’t be controlled.
On Friday, police arrested Shamim Afroz Akhtar, the driver of the pool car that met with the accident in Polba. He was hiding since the accident took place and was caught when he came to meet someone in Shewrafuli at the dead of the night. On receiving the news, the police arrested him after a brief interrogation, said the investigating officer of the case.
The officer further said that the police have slapped several criminal cases on Shamim. He was produced in the court on Friday that sent him to four days of police custody.
