BH CORRESPONDENT, Kolkata: With just hours left for the world’s biggest stars to walk down the red carpet at this year’s Oscars in Los Angeles, let’s just see if we can correctly guess at least some of the winners of the 92nd Academy Awards.
Of course, Joanquin Phoenix has been a clear favourite this awards season and stands a high chance to win the best actor award at the 92nd Academy Awards too. Need we waste any more line on his superlative performance as Arthur Fleck in Todd Phillips’ Joker, which is also nominated for Best Picture at the Oscars 2020? But more than him winning awards, it was his acceptance speeches at the BAFTA, Golden Globes and 26th annual SAG Awards which won him more plaudits. If at BAFTA, Joaquin urged his industry to be more inclusive and mindful of “systemic racism,” at the Golden Globes, the most-sought after actor of 2019 acknowledged the other contenders in the category. The other actors nominated for the Oscar in a leading role are Antonio Banderas (Pain and Glory), Adam Driver (Marriage Story), Jonathan Pryce (The Two Popes), and Leonardo DiCaprio (Once Upon a Time in Hollywood).
There’s a similarity between Joaquin Phoenix and Renée Zellweger. Both were required (Zellweger in Judy) to undergo severe physical transformation just like Phoenix in Joker. And though we loved, absolutely loved Scarlett Johannson in Netflix’s Marriage Story, it seems Zellweger will be going home with her second Oscar after winning the BAFTA, Golden Globes and SAG Awards this season.
As for the award in Best Supporting Actress, we think Laura Dern, who plays the divorce lawyer in Marriage Story will lift the Oscars. Of course, Laura has a stiff competition from actresses like Kathy Bates (Richard Jewell), Scarlett Johansson (Jojo Rabbit), Florence Pugh (Little Women) and Margot Robbie (Bombshell) but in Marriage Story, Dern just made sure the audience will stand up and watch her performance despite the presence of actors like Johansson and Adam Driver.
Just hope Brad Pitt will be at the Oscars to receive the Best Actor in a Supporting Role award for Quentin Tarantino’s Once Upon a Time in Hollywood and not ditch it like the BAFTAs. And Pitt is pitted against some strong actors in this category. Look at the names —Anthony Hopkins (The Two Popes), Al Pacino (The Irishman), Tom Hanks (A Beautiful Day In The Neighborhood), and Joe Pesci (The Irishman). And we predict Brad will walk away with the award, just like his charismatic character Cliff Booth in Once Upon a Time in Hollywood.
Now, who will bag the award for the Best Picture at the 92nd Academy Awards? Will the piercing and extremely realistic Marriage Story starring Scarlett Johansson, or Martin Scorsese’s Netflix epic The Irishman make the cut? Or Phillips’ Joker, which has 11 nominations at the 92nd Academy Awards (also had 11 nominations at BAFTA and won three awards) win on the final day?
And then there’s so much competition between Bong Joon-ho’s Parasite and Sam Mendes’ 1917. In fact, most Oscar predictions say it’s Mendes who might walk away with the coveted award for the Best Picture. We also predict it will be 1917, which will win the Best Picture award. 1917 has had a dream run this awards season with 10 Oscar nominations, including Best Picture and Best Director.
