AGENCIES, Milan: Coronavirus is spreading wide and fast. Except Antarctica, it has spread to all continents from the epidemic’s centre in Wuhan, China. Now, Italy has put the northern half of its territory under lockdown to quarantine the population to contain the spread of the virus after the country saw a surge of 1,247 number of people affected.
This takes the country’s total tally to 5,883 cases and 233 deaths. Giuseppe Conte, the Italian Prime Minister, has ordered Lombardy and 14 other provinces to be put under lockdown till April 3 to contain the virus’s spread, reports CNN. This affects around 16 million people. “We understand that these measures will require sacrifices, but this is the movement of self-responsibility,” said Conte on Saturday.
Other than Lombardy, the provinces of Modena, Parma, Piacenza, Reggio Emilia, Rimini, Pesaro e Urbino, Venezia, Padova, Treviso, Asti, Vercelli, Novara, Verbano Cusio Ossola and Alessandria have also been quarantined, reports Al Jazeera.
Among the measures taken to curb this, schools, university classes, theaters and cinemas, bars, nightclubs, sports events, religious ceremonies and funerals will be suspended, according to CNN.
The coronavirus has affected over 1 lakh people worldwide with over 3,000 deaths. In India, 40 people have been affected, including a group of 17 Italians.
