BH CORRESPONDENT, Kolkata: On April 1 at 9.01 pm, filmmaker Srijit Mukherji had written on his social media accounts that he had successfully completed his 14-day home quarantine period in complete isolation after returning from South Africa on March 19, where he had gone shooting for Kakababur Protyaborton. Amid the nationwide lockdown, those of you who are still struggling to adjust to living under the quarantine, just glance through Srijit’s social media accounts to seek inspiration. This man, with several National Awards now, can surely multitask (always), but even in this time of crisis, when a lot of us are lazing around in quarantine, he cannot help but be super active.
He has watched multiple web-series, finalised the title track of Feluda Pherot over video conference, discussed his favourite Hindi film lyricists, is writing his next script Iti Bina (and that’s our favourite part) and started the editing of Kakababur Protyaborton. And after all this, the Dwitiyo Purush director, also romances with his dearest wife Rafiath Rashid Mithila, who is in Bangladesh and cheers up her daughter Ayra on video conference.
Of course, like everyone Srijit, too, is waiting for the coronavirus lockdown to end. He wants to meet his wife Mithila and daughter. But given how quickly cases have multiplied in India, and India’s poor testing rate, the director mentioned how he wants the lockdown should continue till at least mid-June. Of course, his post on social media had received mixed response with some question about the crashing economy and daily wage earners, but are you willing to risk your life?

Meanwhile, the release of a number of Bengali films are getting pushed back due to COVID-19. However, that does not deter Srijit. On day 12 of his self-isolation, he announced that he is not ready to go down without a fight. So, even in the lockdown, the edit of Kakababur Protyaborton, which starts Prosenjit Chatterjee in the lead role, has started.
“Day 12 of not seeing a human being in flesh and blood. If we have to go down, we will not go down without a fight. The edit of #KakababurProtyaborton starts,” he tweeted.
The director has also revealed that in quarantine, he has begun writing his new script Iti Bina— a story on freedom fighter Bina Das, who on February 6, 1932, attempted to assassinate the then Bengal Governor Stanley Jackson, in the Convocation Hall of the University of Calcutta. However, she fired five shots but failed and was jailed for nine years.
The Shah Jahan Regency director also piqued the interest of his fans, when one of them asked him to pick the cast for his version of Mahabharat and Ramayan. Now, let us tell you something here. The country is gripped in Ramayan and Mahabharat fervour now. The cult mythological shows are back and according to a recent report by BARC India, Ramayan rerun on Doordarshan got the highest ever rating for a Hindi GEC show since 2015, when BARC started measuring TV audience. Ramayan garnered 170 million viewers in four shows over the last weekend in its new avatar, the BARC said on Thursday.
And given the envious casting Srijit has announced, we are sure the producers would be calling up the director soon. So, who will play Lord Ram in Srijit’s Ramayan? Well, no it’s not his favourite actor Anirban ‘Khoka’ Bhattacharya but Abir Chatterjee, who took the cake away this time. Sita’s role goes to Tanusree Chakraborty, Lakshman will be played by Arjun Chakraborty, Bharat’s role will be essayed by Gaurav Chakraborty and the brillaint Mithun Chakraborty will be seen in the character of Ravan in Srijit makes Ramayan. So, where is Anirban? Well, he will be seen as Meghnad. Now, let’s make one thing clear here. Srijit has unveiled a hypothetical casting of Ramayan and Mahabharat and this has gone viral on social media
Now, this casting has made Abir happy, who says he hasn’t received a titular role in Srijit’s film. And the filmmaker was quick to point out Shah Jahan Regency, where he was ‘almost the Shah Jahan’.
If Ramayan comes, can Mahabharat be far. No, the casting of Mahabharat was done earlier by Srijit, which has actors like Aparna Sen and Prosenjit Chatterjee playing Kunti and Bhimsa. Here, Anirban will be seen as Karna, Jisshu Sengupta as Arjun, Parambrata Chatterjee will be Krishna, Duryodhana will be Jeet, Paoli Dam will be seen as Draupadi, Bhim’s role will go to Dev, Yudhisthir will be played by Abir, Ritwick Chakraborty will be seen as Shakuni and Rudranil Ghosh as Bidur.
Amid all these film talks, Srijit also announced himself as ‘worthless’ when his mother, Sumita Sarkar, retired after 44 years of her teaching career as a professor of anatomy at various colleges like Calcutta Medical College, National Medical College, Bankura Medical College, Burdwan Medical College and KPC Medical College. “44 years with an average of 150 students would mean 6600 doctors passed out under her tutelage. Now if you multiply the number of human lives saved by even a percentage of these doctors all these years, or even look at the ones who have now donned PPE capes and are fighting Corona, then- Well let it be. Congratulations for an epic innings Maa and thank you for reminding me how worthless I am for the society in real terms,” tweeted his filmmaker son.
And the nights are mostly reserved for Mithila, and one such night we saw her strumming the guitar and crooning Nijeke Valobaso Tumi Ebar from Mainak Bhaumik 2013 film Maach Mishti & More. Interestingly, the lyrics are penned by her husband only. Now, many did not know that Mithila, who is a Bangladeshi actress, and development worker, and is also in home quarantine and spending time with her daughter, could play playing guitar and sing. She also shared the video on Instagram and captioned it love in the time of corona. Hope we soon see her singing for one of Srijit’s many films.
Srijit had to leave for South Africa the very next day of his Kolkata reception. So, the couple never got to spend time with each other. Recently, Srijit and Mithila have shared photos and video of their wedding reception. They look beautiful with each other.

By now, a lot of you know that they met on social media and fell in love. And when the world is struggling to combat with coronavirus, the husband and wife are again using social media and technology to be in love, to stay in touch. We hope the world heals soon and the wife and daughter get back to Srijit.
