New Delhi: Nirbhaya’s mother Asha Devi on Friday broke down at the court as hours before the 2012 Nirbhaya case convicts were to be hanged at Tihar Jail a Delhi Court postponed the execution of the convicts “until further orders”.
Additional Sessions Judge Dharmender Rana passed the order on the convicts’ plea for staying their execution on February 1. Therefore, convicts Vinay Sharma, Pawan Gupta, Mukesh Singh, and Akshay Singh will not be hanged until further court orders.
“The death warrant has been cancelled and no new date has been given,” said lawyer AP Singh fighting for the case for one of the convicts.
One of the four death convicts – Vinay – filed a mercy petition on Wednesday with the President Ram Nath Kovind.
The execution of the death sentence against Pawan, Vinay, Akshay, and Mukesh, were issued on January 17.
As of now, it is only Mukesh who has exhausted all his legal remedies including the clemency plea which was dismissed by the President on January 17. However, his appeal against the rejection was thrown out by the Supreme Court on January 29.
