BH CORRESPONDENT, Mumbai: On Wednesday, actor Kangana Ranaut and her sister Rangoli Chandel have been issued summon by the Mumbai police in a sedition case, news agency ANI has reported. Kangana and Rangoli have been asked to appear before the investigating officer on October 26 and 27.
According to NDTV, the FIR against them was registered last week following an order from the Mumbai High Court.
In response to a petition from a casting director who alleged that Kangana, besides defaming Bollywood, was also “creating a communal divide” through her tweets, the court said a thorough investigation by an expert is necessary, reported NDTV.
“She is well aware that she is a well-known actress and has a big fan base so her tweets will be seen and will reach out to many people,” the petitioner underlined.
“The allegations are based upon the comments made on electronic media – Twitter and interviews – and a thorough investigation by an expert is necessary,” the court said, directing the police station concerned to “initiate necessary action and investigation against the actor and her sister under relevant provisions of Criminal Procedure Code (CrPC).”
Kangana is “creating divisions between Hindu artists and Muslim artists,” the petitioner has alleged, stressing that she “is maliciously bringing religion into almost all her tweets”.
The actress has been slamming Bollywood in a series of tweets. On Friday, she started a trend called #IndiaRejectBollywood. She asked people to reject the derogatory word ‘Bollywood’ and said that it was stolen from Hollywood.
“There are ARTISTS and there are BHANDS there is INDIAN FILM INDUSTRY and there is BOLLYWOOD #IndiaRejectBollywood most ridiculous word BOLLYWOOD itself copied and stolen from HOLLYWOOD. Please reject this derogatory word #IndiaRejectBollywood,” she tweeted.
