BH CORRESPONDENT, Kolkata: Three members of the same family allegedly tried to commit suicide by consuming poison at around 1.3 am on Friday due to poverty in the wake of COVID-19 lockdown. The incident took place at Regent Park area in Kolkata and spread panic among the local residents. Police rescued and admitted them to Baghajatin Hospital. The investigation is presently underway.
Pranati Singh Sohail (60) lived with her two sons at the Sonali Park residence in the Regent Parkarea. Her husband died 12 years ago. Since then, she has been staying with her sons Devendra Singh Sohail (45) and Atindra Singh Sohail (40). The younger son is said to be paralyzed. Even her own left leg is injured. She used to selling City Gold ornaments at a shop in Bansdroni area. But the nationwide coronavirus lockdown, impacted her business and poverty hit the family.
The youngest son rang a close relative before attempting suicide. “We are all committing suicide,” he said over the phone. The relative rushed to the Sonali Park residence with the police.
The police found the door was closed from inside and broke it. They found the two boys lying on the floor of the drawing room and the elderly woman lying in the bedroom. They were immediately taken to Baghajatin Hospital.
On June 17, Kolkata reported seven suicides in a day by hanging. According to the police, the youngest victim was 10-year-old, while the oldest was 70.
