BH CORRESPONDENT, Kolkata: Malayalam film Jallikattu is India’s official entry for the 93rd Academy Awards in the Best International Feature Film category, the Film Federation of India (FFI) announced on Wednesday at a virtual press meet.
The jury headed by Rahul Rawail, voted in majority for Lijo Jose Pellissery’s critically acclaimed film Jallikattu to be sent as India’s representative to the Oscar, which will be held in April 2021.
Jallikattu is based on the short story Maoist by Hareesh. The film stars Antony Varghese, Chemban Vinod Jose, Sabumon Abdusamad and Santhy Balachandran. The plot follows a bull that escapes from a slaughterhouse in a hilly remote village and the entire village men gathering to hunt down the animal.
Rahul Rawail, chairman, jury, FFI, said that the film has been depicted wonderfully. “It is a film which really brings out the raw side of human beings, that we are worse than animals. Human instincts are worse than animals. The film has been depicted wonderfully. It’s a production that all of us should be proud of. The film has been shot very well. The emotions, which come out, moved all of us. Lijo is a very competent director,” he said.
For Jallikattu Pellissery bagged the best director award at the 50th International Film Festival of India (IFFI) last year. The film was premiered at 2019 Toronto International Film Festival.
The selection committee has chosen Jallikattu among 27 films, including 22 Hindi films, two Marathi, two Malayalam and one Oriya.
