SOUMEN DATTA, Kolkata: Despite the total lockdown, a wine shop on Narkeldanga Main Road opposite BC Roy Children’s Hospital in Kolkata opened its shutters on Wednesday afternoon. “We did not give any permission to open the shop,” said Subhankar Sinha Sarkar, Joint CP (Headquarters). The Lalbazar Police Control Room was also unaware about the incident.
It was around 2.15 pm and a long queue was seen near B.C Roy Children’s Hospital. One would think that this was to buy medicines or groceries. But soon it came to light that people queued up to buy liquor. What’s even more strange is that some cops and civic volunteers were seen managing the line.
But the police top brass were clueless about any order regarding opening of wine and liquor shops. This at a time when the Prime Minister Narendra Modi and West Bengal chief minister Mamata Banerjee have been harping on social distancing to tame the coronavirus.
