BH CORRESPONDENT, Kolkata: When it comes to fighting coronavirus, Kolkata Police seems to be way ahead of its peers in the country. From enforcing a complete lockdown to generating awareness through campiagns to delivering food packets to the needy and the aged, the cops have been doing it all and more
On Thursday morning, people in the Entally area of Kolkata were surprised to see a huge posse of policemen on the streets. Fearing a crackdown, the few who had ventured out to buy essentials, ran helter skelter. But to their surprise, the officer-in-charge of the Entally police station, Debashis Dutta, who was leading the team, announced over the microphone thay they were in the locality to thank the people for obeying the lockdown order.
Dutta even referred to the Hollywood blockbuster Contagion, saying the situation arising out of coronavirus in the country was worse than that of the movie. “So we must all stay indoors and help the nation to contain the virus,” he said. He congratulated the residents of several highrises in the area for staying at home.
Dutta then he asked everyone to clap to the tune of We Shall Overcome while his men sang the iconic song.
Not just in Bengali or Hindi, the cops have also been campaigning in English to make sure that the message reaches all.

The cops, of course, have been using the baton, too. In an incident at the Leather Complex area, the police had to resort to a mild lathi-charge to disperse a group of 50 who had gathered there violating lockdown rules.
