KUNAL CHATTERJEE, Kolkata: At a time when West Bengal and Centre is at loggerheads with the tackling of the COVID-19 situation, ESI Hospital in Thakurpukur, Kolkata has a new crisis on hand.
At present, Kolkata Police posted at ESI Hospital are finding it a bit difficult to manage the junior doctors who are staying at the hostel amid lockdown. The ESI hospital has been turned into a COVID-19 hospital. Some new rules have been set, which did not make the junior doctors happy. The authorities have specifically informed the police officers not to allow any food delivery boys inside the premises keeping in mind the safety of the junior doctors.
Now, most trainee doctors here hail from other states. They mostly order food from outside though there are two canteens inside the premises. A few days ago, a group of medical students suddenly rushed outside the main gate and charged the police officers on duty for not letting the delivery boys enter the premise.
A senior officer stationed at the gate with his team said, “They asked me to show the written order from the authorities. The students were in a mood to create a chaos but somehow other officers approached and pacified them. Though we are asking them continuously to wear masks but most of them are not listening. This is a threat to us also. We don’t expect doctors to behave so irresponsibly. They are going in and out according to their whims and fancies. We have reported the matter to the authorities.”
Abhishek Dubey, a fourth year medical student said, “We have a huge campus. It is quite irritating for us to come out to the main gate to collect our food. The canteens are also not functioning regularly. On top of that, the policemen are imposing so many rules and regulations upon us. When we enquired with the senior doctors, they said they didn’t know about new orders.”
