BH CORRESPONDENT, Kolkata: A day after Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee warned aginst spreading false new about coronavirus on the social media, the cyber cell of Kolkata Police arrested 29-year-old Chandrima Bhowmik for her post that said a doctor working at the Beliaghata ID Hospital has tested positive for COVID-19. It so turned out that this news was incorrect.
“Soon after Bhowmik’s fake post surfaced on the social media, people started to distance themselves from the doctor and other health officials. Some landowners had even gone to the extent of asking tenants working at the ID hospital to vacate their houses. The cops immediately swung into action and traced the post to Chandrima. She has been booked under several sections of the IT Act,” a police officer probing the case said.
In fact, several account holders on Facebook and Twitter are under the scanner for posting confusing material on COVID-19. Most of them do not have any scientific or medical basis and has created quite a stir among the people. More such arrests are expected in the coming days, a police officer said.
Chandrima Bhowmik had alleged that a doctor named Yogiraj working at the Beliaghata ID Hospital had tested positive for coronavirus. This led to a lot of panic among other doctors and nurses at the hospital thathas been treating COVID-19 patients.
