BH CORRESPONDENT, Kolkata: In a failed but sensational kidnap bid, a 32-year-old woman was dragged from the road inside an ambulance in the Topsia area on Tuesday night. The woman’s father-in-law, 58-year-old Gopal Pramanik, was knocked down by the vehicle and he later died in hospital.

The police arrested the driver of the rogue vehicle late on Wednesday night. The family was returning from a marriage party on Tuesday night when an ambulance stopped beside the woman and the men inside tried to drag the woman inside the vehicle.

The woman shouted for help and her father-in-law Pramanik stood in front of the ambulance to stop it. The panicky ambulance driver tried to speed away knocking down Gopal Pramanik. “They dragged my father-in-law up to 500 meters and fled. We took him to NRS Medical College and Hospital where doctors declared him brought dead,” the woman told the police.

On Wednesday morning, the woman along with her mother-in-law, went to the Tangra police station and filed a complaint. “Last night we had information that an elderly man was knocked down by a speeding ambulance. Today we learnt that there was an abduction bid at Tangra area and the man died after he tried to stop the ambulance. We have started a case of murder against unknown miscreants,” said an officer of Tangra police station.

The police are examining the CCTV footage of all the intersections of Tangra and Topsia area to identify the ambulance. The police are also talking to the woman to get some clue about the miscreants.
