BH CORRESPONDENT, Mumbai: Kareena Kapoor Khan made the country (and the men in it) bow to her feet when she stepped out of the sea in a neon green bikini in the iconic scene from Tashan (2008). Here, she caught the eye of the Saif Ali Khan, the love of her life.
While taking on this biggie project of Yash Raj Films, she was already shooting for Jab We Met (2007). This period can be said to be Kareena’s most important phase in life. Her career rose to newfound heights with the resounding success of Jab We Met even though she went through a much-publicized and painful breakup with Shahid Kapoor, her co-star and ex-flame.
Till today, both Kareena and Shahid’s characters – Geet and Aditya in Jab We Met – are still a hit onscreen and are considered their best roles till date. But few knew that commercial success could sound the death knell for the arrows of Cupid.
Thirteen years after her breakup with Shahid, Kareena recently opened up in an interview to Film Companion. Talking about Jab We Met, Kareena said, “In fact it was Shahid who actually said that I should hear this script of this film. He was like, ‘It’s amazing, the girl’s part is amazing and you should do it.’ He kind of actually got this entire project together and both of us ended up doing this film. Of course, destiny had its own plan and life took its own course. A lot happened in the making of this film and Tashan and our lives … We all kind of went our separate ways. And this beauty of a movie came out of it (sic).”
On the other hand, Tashan – which she had pegged to be a game changer (she imagined herself to be in Uma Thurman’s position during Kill Bill) – fared miserably at the box office and brought her to brief depression. But she fell in love with Saif on its sets. Incidentally, she said that Jab We Met “changed her career” while Tashan “changed her life.”
Today, however, there is a bridge over troubled waters. Kareena, who will soon be seen playing a sexy cop in Angrezi Medium, is happy with Saif and Taimur while Shahid is raising two children with his wife Mira.
