Mumbai: The trailer of Anubhav Sinha’s Thappad starring the feisty Taapsee Pannu in the lead role begins with her seeking separation from her husband (Pavail Gulati). No, her husband hasn’t cheated on her. He has just slapped her. Even her lawyer is stunned. How can a wife want a divorce from her husband over a slap? But as we reach the end of the trailer, which is hard-hitting and extremely relevant in today’s society, Taapsee’s character says, “Mujhe woh saari cheezein saaf-saaf dikhne lagi jisko main move on karke undekha karte ja rahi thi.” And by this time, we have already made up our mind to watch this film the first day, first show.
Many netizens said the moment the trailer was out, it was a tight slap on Kabir Singh director Sandeep Reddy Vanga’s face. Thappad focuses on domestic violence. The trailer also reminds us of toxic masculinity and patriarchal society, which very much exists and some women need to fight almost every day. And only a handful like Taapsee’s character in the trailer can fight back and say, “Just a slap. But he can’t hit me.” More power to women, we say.
Taapsee took to Twitter to share the trailer of Thappad.

The trailer has found many fans already and it was trending on social media. Also, the fans instantly started comparing Taapsee’s film with Shahid Kapoor’s recording-breaking Kabir Singh, where the hero was rather violent with his bae (Kiara Advani). In fact, the controversy gained further momentum when director Vanga defended the slap scene in Kabir Singh and said in an interview with the Film Companion, “When you are deeply in love and deeply connected with a woman, and vice versa, there’s a lot of honesty in it. If you don’t have that physical demonstration… you don’t have the liberty of slapping each other, then I don’t see anything there.”
For social media users, violence in the name of love is strictly a no-no.

Thappad also starring Ratna Pathak Shah, Manav Kaul, Dia Mirza, Tanvi Azmi, and Ram Kapoor will release on February 28.
For Taapsee, who has earlier worked with Anubhav in Mulk, said, “When he discussed Thappad, I immediately decided this was a film I had to do. It has a thought-provoking storyline and deals with a subject, which must be addressed in our society.”
She further added, “To put it in perspective, looking at what we aim to convey with our film, I can say Thappad is this year’s Pink.”
In 2019, Anubhav received both critical acclaim and box office success with Ayushmann Khurrana-starrer Article 15.
