BH CORRESPONDENT, Mumbai: India lost one of its finest actors — Irrfan Khan — on Wednesday — at the age of 53 in Mumbai. Irrfan is survived by wife Sutapa Sikder, and sons Babil and Ayan. The Life of Pi actor was diagnosed with neuroendocrine tumour in 2018, and was under treatment for the same. The family has released an official statement after the demise of the actor.
“‘I trust, i have surrendered’; These were the some of the many words that Irrfan expressed in a heartfelt note he wrote in 2018, opening up about his fight with cancer. And a man of few words and an actor of silent expressions with his deep eyes and his memorable actions on screen. It’s saddening that this day, we have to bring forward the news of him passing away. Irrfan was a strong soul, someone who fought till the very end and always inspired everyone who came close to him. After having been struck by lightning in 2018 with the news of a rare cancer, he took life soon after as it came and he fought the many battles that came with it. Surrounded by his love, his family for whom he most cared about, he left for his heavenly abode, leaving behind truly a legacy of his own. We all pray and hope that he is at peace. And to resonate and part with his words he had said, “As if I was tasting life for the first time, the magical side of it”,” read the statement.
On Tuesday, the Maqbool actor was rushed to Kokilaben Dhirubhai Ambani hospital in Mumbai. He was admitted to the ICU due to colon infection.
Shoojit Sircar, Irrfan’s Piku director, is one of the first to tweet the news.

The actor was last seen on the big screen in Angrezi Medium, a sequel to Hindi Medium. However, after a day of its release in March, the nationwide coronavirus lockdown was announced. Later, the film also starring Radika Madan, Deepak Dobriyal and Kareena Kapoor, was released on OTT platform. The Namesake actor could not promote the film and he had said he had some ‘unwanted guests’ in his body (referring to neuroendocrine tumour) and he will be not be able to promote it. However, he promises to keep his fans updated.
“When life gives you lemons, you make lemonade. Sounds good… but when you get a handful of lemons it isn’t that easy to squeeze them. And we always have the choice to stay positive. In situations like these it’s up to us to make lemonade,” he says in the video.
At the end of the video shared by Maddock Films, Irrfan asks his fans to enjoy the trailer of Angrezi Medium and to remain positive in life. “Enjoy the trailer and be kind to each other, and watch the film. And yes…wait for me.”
