BH CORRESPONDENT, Kolkata: A clash broke out between inmates of the newly-shifted Baruipur correctional home in South 24 Parganas on Monday night. A jail official was seriously injured and two others sustained minor injuries while trying to restore peace.
After the fight broke out, sub-jailer Shyamal Bhattacharya and other prison officials tried to intervene when they were attcked by the inmates. The prisoners even vandalised the jail premises. When the police arrived, they were stoned by the prisoners. Later, Bhattacharya was admitted to Baruipur sub-divisional hosipital.
Though a huge police force went to the spot to take control over the situation, the prisoners were pacified only after they spoke to the higher officials. Superintendent of Police Rashid Munir Khan said, “There are a lot of issues that they are speaking of. We will look into their allegations. I have personally given my mobile number to the inmates so that they can speak to me.”
It is not known what exactly triggered the unrest among the inmates. A senior jail officer said, “We have promised the prisoners that no action will be taken against them just to calm them down. They have a lot of complaints against the jail authorities.”
He added that senior jail officials have decided to transfer the jail superintendent and the sub-jailer. The allegations leveled by the prisoners will also be probed, he said. Jail Minister Ujjal Biswas also visited the Baruipur jail on Monday night.
