BH CORRESPONDENT, Mumbai: The Masakali song — of course, the iconic one composed by AR Rahman, penned by Prasoon Joshi and sung by Mohit Chauhan from Rakeysh Omprakash Mehra’s 2009 film Delhi 6 — is still fresh in our memories. With the white pigeon sitting on Sonam Kapoor’s head, she dances on the terrace of a old Delhi house, as Abhishek Bachchan imitates her. Binod Pradhan’s camera then follows the lead characters in the narrow alleys of purani Delhi, Metro station and we get some brilliant images alongside Rahman’s soulful music.
Cut to 2020 lockdown and Masakali 2.0 drops. No offence but Tanishk Bagchi’s recreated version of Masakali with Sidharth Malhotra and Tara Sutaria is undoubtedly one of the “worst” remakes of old Bollywood numbers. Tanishk has gifted some really good tracks of Bollywood before be it Banno from Tanu Weds Manu Returns and Bolna from Kapoor & Sons. Even his remixes be it the The Humma Song, or Taama Tamma Again were good recreations and we absolutely adore them. And even the actors pulled off them really well.
But in Masakali 2.0 even the actors – Sidharth and Tara – who are seen getting romantic in a posh hotel room on a rainy night seem so disinterested. And what is wrong with Sidharth’s hair? Did he shoot the song amid lockdown? Even the steps they do seem so gloomy.
But this time, Tanishk disappoints. Neither the song has the zeal of earlier Masakali number nor the actors have the peppiness to enact it. Can we be a bit more sensible when it comes to remixing old numbers? Let’s not do random remake of songs and films please? And even the netizens are not at all pleased with Masakali 2.0.
