AGENCIES, New York: A New York jury comprising seven men and five women announced a milestone verdict on Monday especially for the #MeToo movement when Hollywood mogul Harvey Weinstein was convicted of sexual assault and rape. However, 67-year-old Weinstein was acquitted of the most serious charges, which could have landed him up in jail for 25 years.
One of the most influential producers in Hollywood, who has made films like Pulp Fiction, Shakespeare in Love, The King’s Speech, Good Will Hunting and August: Osage County to name a few, Weinstein was convicted of sexually assaulting former production assistant Mimi Haleyi in 2006. Later in 2013, Weinstein was convicted of raping Jessica Mann, an aspiring actress.
At least 80 women had accused Weinstein of sexual misconduct including actresses like Uma Thurman, Salma Hayek, and Gwyneth Paltrow. In fact, as soon as Weinstein’s case came out in the public, more women were encouraged and inspired to tell their stories of sexual harassment.
Weinstein wore a blue suit and came with a walker to the court. He will be sentenced on March 11.
