AGENCIES, New Delhi: With the current coronavirus pandemic around, almost everyone has something to say on how to go about it. Common to all is the message prevention is better than cure.
US President Donald Trump has advised citizens to find their own way to mask themselves. In India, the government is probably aware that there isn’t enough production and supply of masks so it has come up with a doable solution. It suggests citizens to make their own masks as Do-it-Yourself (DIY) project. The simple to understand and execute manual explains how to make and use protective masks act home.
“Certain countries have claimed benefits of homemade face cover for the general public. Such homemade face cover is a good method for maintaining personal hygiene. Such usage certainly will help in maintaining overall hygienic health conditions,” the advisory read.
However, there’s a word of caution. These basic protective masks or face covers are not recommended for coronavirus +ive patients or those involved in their care including healthcare workers and medical professionals.
For healthcare professionals, they are mandated to use the N95 type of protective masks.
For each individual, the manual recommends making two sets so that while one is in use, the other can be cleaned and kept ready.
These face covers can be made out of clean cloth. The cloth to be used for the purpose has be thoroughly cleaned and washed. The design should be prepared in such a manner that it can cover the mouth and nose completely and can be tied over the face easily suggests the manual.
However, according to the WHO, “Masks are effective only when used in combination with frequent hand-cleaning with alcohol-based hand rub or soap and water. If you wear a mask, then you must know how to use it and dispose of it properly.”
