AGENCIES, Washington/Berlin: The going is not so good for China these days. Its economy is down goodwill shattered and beyond repair and is being hit with one crisis after another.
On one hand, China’s fiscal revenue tumbled 26.1% in March from a year earlier, officials said on Monday, extending the previous month’s slump as the coronavirus pandemic ravaged the economy.
The flip side is that Western economic powers are joining hands to corner China over the global coronavirus pandemic. If the aggressive trend is to be continued, then there’s more trouble in store for Chinese authorities to handle.
Besides the regular allegations about the origins of coronavirus and how it spread from China, two things are in the minds of these superpowers: US wants to send a fact-finding team inside China and established ‘who caused it’ and there’s a second group that wants China to compensate them for the chaos and distress the virus has created.
Germany has sparked outrage in China last week after a major newspaper put together a £130bn invoice that Beijing “owes” Berlin following the impact of the coronavirus pandemic.
US President Donald Trump on Sunday said his government wants to send a team of experts inside China to investigate coronavirus, a day after he warned Beijing of consequences if it was knowingly responsible for the spread of Covid-19 which has killed over 41,000 in America. The US has launched its own investigation into whether the deadly virus “escaped” from the Wuhan Institute of Virology.
