BH CORRESPONDENT, Kolkata: Many cine-stars have made it big in politics and have carried on with both careers with great success. Not Tapas Pal. A brilliant actor in his hey days and cast in films by none other than Tarun Mazumdar, it was politics that pulled him down.
Otherwise known as a bhadralok for his quiet manners and boy-next-door looks, Pal’s transformation after his political plunge took his fans by shock. When he was the Trinamool MP from Krishnanagar, he told a rally in the district that he would let loose his boys who would rape and plunder the homes of his opponents.
That day, the hero of his countless fans became a villain. And his party, too, started disowning him.
The Rose Valley chit fund scam was the last nail in Tapas Pal’s coffin. The CBI got after him and he spent more than a year in jail before being bailed out in February 2018.
All this while, the distance between Trinamool supremo Mamata Banerjee and Tapas Pal grew and he was not given a party ticket in the last parliamentary elections.
Pal made a last-ditch effort to make a comeback in film, but his health broke down.
