BH CORRESPONDENT, Kolkata: A friend and colleague of the 55-year-old Dum Dum resident, who died on Monday in Kolkata due to coronavirus, has been admitted to NRS Hospital with coronavirus like symptoms. He was suffering from major breathing problem since this morning. His samples were sent for testing and results are awaited.
According to sources, he is also a resident of Dum Dum area and he used to sit besides the elderly man at office. After the 55-year-old man tested positive, he started developing the symptoms.
On the other hand, pandemonium was created surrounding the funeral of the elderly Dum Dum resident in Kolkata when the police tried to remove the locals, who protested against the funeral of the deceased at the neighbouring Nimtala Ghat crematorium fearing infection would spread. Also, there was a lot of confusion in the air regarding how the elderly man got the infection. It added more fuel to the fire when chief minister Mamata Banerjee said that the man went to Italy. Later it was found that he did not go to any foreign country as he does not possess passport. However, the man’s son later sent a letter of consent to the police for cremation as he was in the USA.
The Eastern Railway authorities have asked the colleagues of Dum Dum residents to stay in home quarantine as the 55-year-old man, who was also an Eastern Railway employee, used to attend office even a few days ago. After he had developed flu like symptoms along with breathing trouble, his colleagues took him to Salt Lake AMRI hospital where he had been admitted. He was put on ventilation where he died on Monday.
Meanwhile, Mamata on Tuesday extended the lockdown from municipality areas to entire state till March 31. Earlier, the lockdown was till March 27.
