AGENCIES, Paris: Accepting the grim situation created in his country by coronavirus pandemic, French President Emmanuel Macron has asked citizens to remain indoors and avoid unnecessary outings. France has reported 21 more coronavirus deaths and 1,210 new cases of infection in the past 24 hours, bringing the total number of fatalities to 148.
Macron seemed to be upset after reports came in that people flocked outside in defiance of warnings over the weekend.
In his speech, Macron ordered people to stay at home to avoid spreading the new coronavirus, saying only necessary trips would be allowed and violations would be punished.
Macron’s orders came as the country has announced 21 more coronavirus deaths and 1,210 new cases of infection in the past 24 hours, bringing the total number of fatalities to 148.
Macron insisted that the French people had to “severely restrict movements for the next 15 days at least” and limit social contacts as much as possible.
Interior Minister Christophe Castaner added that anyone found outside would have to provide justification of their reasons for travelling. Indicating that the government was serious about implementing the orders, 100,000 law enforcement officers have been put on patrolling duties.
France had already announced stringent new measures to close bars, restaurants and cinemas, which came after the closure of schools and a ban on large gatherings.
