BH CORRESPONDENT, Kolkata: The police on Friday detained Kailash Vijayvargiya, BJP’s national general-secretary and senior party leader Mukul Roy when they were le ading a rally in support of the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) in South Kolkata. Senior police officials said that the two BJP leaders were detained as the party did not have prior permission to organise the rally.
“We did not expect such forceful attitude from the police. The way we were prevented to go ahead with the rally and then detained is unconstitutional. We were participating in the rally in support of the CAA in a democratic way. The entire country is supporting it. We condemn the way the government is trying to stop us,” Vijayvargiya told reporters.
Both Vijayvargiya and Mukul Roy were taken to Lalbazar police headquarters.
“The police is allowing rallies against the CAA but they are denying permission for protests in favour of the CAA,” Vijayvargiya added.
The state BJP had planned a march called the Avinandan Yatra in support of the CAA from Tollygunge to Hazra Crosing on Friday. When the cops stopped the march, BJP cadres clashed with the police.
After Vijayvargiya and Mukul Roy were detained, BJP supporters blocked the road in Tollygunge. BJP cadres also clashed with the police at Hazra crossing. The cops here detained fashion designer turned BJP leader Agnimitra Paul and took her to Lalbazar.
Meanwhile, Union Minister Babul Supriyo took to Twitter to slam the Mamata Banerjee government.
Amazed to see such an humiliating act. The TMChhi Govt wants everyone to be its puppet! No one was arrested when she was doing “Ka-ka-chhi-chhi” with her supporters or when her hooligan brothers were destroying Government properties! (2) #TMChii #CAAJanJagran pic.twitter.com/g4V5lbITIA
