BH CORRESPONDENT, Kolkata: Following a Supreme Court ruling on Saturday ordering all states to release inmates who have been jailed for a maximum of seven years on parole following the coronavius crisis, the West Bengal government has decided to release 3000 prisoners lodged in different jails.
Jail staff also fear that they could be victims of the deadly disease in the absence of any protective gear.
A jail staffer said that relevant papers for parole are being readied. The prison authorities will decide how long an inmate can be allowed parole. “Every one of them has to come back to their respective jails once the parole period is over,” he said.
This SC verdict and the decision of the state government have been welcomed by the prisoners and their families. Riots had recently broken out in the Dum Dum jail after the authorities refused family members to meet the inmates due to the fear of corona entering the jail premises. Three prisoners had died and several others injured during the clash.
