SOUMEN DUTTA, Kolkata: It may be just another government hospital, but the Beliaghata Infectious Disease Hospital has become the model of all private and state-run hospitals in the state treating coronavirus patients.
In the absence of any particular drug or vaccine to battle COVID-19, the protocol they follow are the basics; treat fever with any paracetomol and if anyone suffers from throat and chest congestion, Azithromycin is the drug administered. Add to that sufficient water to drink and oxygen if required. Period.
This has given the doctors at the ID Hospital good results. Out of the total of 24 corona-positive patients admitted since the beginning of the outbreak in the state, 12have been sent home hale and hearty.
The success rate has led the state government to ask all other hospitals in Bengal to follow the protocol laid down by the ID Hospital authorities.
A trip to the Beliaghata hospital revealed just how things were under control. None of the patients were critical and only a few elderly ones were given oxygen support. Ventilation was not required for any of the patients.
“The doctors and nursing staff were very jovial and answered all my queries with a smile. Doctors advised me not to panic during my stay at the hospital. They even told me to watch movies on Hotstar and Netflix and listen to music,” said the Habra girl who had come from Scotland with COVID-19 infection.
The doctors even allowed normal diet for the corona patients. “I was given fish, egg and chicken as protein is essential to fight the virus,” said the girl.
Sources at the hospital said that only the youth from Ballygunge who had coronavirus infection was allowed to take home-made food as he was a vegetarian,” a doctor said.
