KUNAL CHATTERJEE, Kolkata: A 29-year-old Army official got into a heated argument and later into a fight with the West Bengal police officers in Sagar area, following which he was arrested on Tuesday. A senior police officer said that the accused Akhil Majhi was taken into custody on charges of obstructing the government officials from carrying out their duty and was sent to the Kakdwip Court today.
The incident took place at around 2 pm when Majhi, an Army official, was coming from Rupnagar side towards Kapil Muni Ashram. The police had set up a naka in front of the Sagar Police Station when they stopped Majhi.
A local, who was present at the spot, said that Majhi was asked to dish out some money to the police as he was not wearing the helmet. “But the rider started arguing and he didn’t want to pay any money. He also insisted that the police should give him either a challan or a seizure list. At that moment the officer-in-charge Bapi Roy reached the spot and intervened. The argument went to such an extent that Majhi started to hit Roy and his second officer after which he was immediately arrested”, said the eye witness on condition of anonymity.
A senior police officer said, “We were on special naka checking when we intercepted the offending vehicle. He claimed that he must be excused as he is an Army official. Since we insisted on putting a traffic violation fine, he manhandled our senior officers.”
Majhi is presently posted with the Panagarh Army base and had returned to Sagar, his home town on a vacation. He was on his way to the Kapil Muni Ashram to offer prayers when the incident took place.
The officer further said that Mahji was booked under several sections of the IPC and CrPC and was produced in the Kakdwip court on Wednesday.
