Kolkata: What’s common between Paanch Adhyay, Shaheb Bibi Golaam, Ahare Mon and Love Aaj Kal Porshu? Yes, we know Pratim D Gupta has directed all the films. But then, the theme of love ties all these films together and so does Pratim’s pervasive episodic storytelling.
But in Love Aaj Kal Porshu (is it coincidental or intentional that Imitiaz Ali’s Love Aaj Kal is simultaneously releasing on Valentine’s Day), there’s a lovely twist. Here, Pratim presents before us three couples, and interestingly all the couples are played by Arjun Chakrabarty and Madhumita Sarkar (who had essayed the character of Pakhi in hugely successful TV serial Bojhena Se Bojhena). Now, that’s something new for a Bengali film?
But then, the lives of Abhishek-Tapsee, Abhiroop-Tripti, and Abhijit-Trina (remember all played by Arjun and Madhumita) which is connected by love go through a lot of changes, courtesy the entry of Paoli Dam as Kalki Maitra. Kalki is in-charge of Paradise, a luxurious hotel and the moment the couples step into Paradise, it leads to a mysterious yet unique and unforgettable saga of love.

By this time we know Paoli is lucky for Pratim (remember her in Maacher Jhol, Mirchi Malini, Ahare Mon and Shantilal O Projapoti Rohoshyo). So, the moment Paoli enters the frame, the tempo gathers pace. The trailer also gives us a glimpse of Paoli’s team – Anindita Bose, Anirban Chakrabarti, and Abhijit Guha.
Just by looking at the trailer, we are sure that Arjun and Madhumita make a ravishing new pair. Earlier, Jisshu Sengupta and Mimi Chakraborty were supposed to do this film, but now watching the trailer, well, we can say Madhumita will give a stiff competition to a lot of leading Bengali actresses in 2020. And their steamy and sensuous screen presence will be the talk of the town. Good to see well shot and glamorous sensual scenes in Bengali cinema after a long time.
Before the trailer was out, Madhumita’s social media was flooded with requests to do the next film with actor Yash Dasgupta (with whom she had done the hit Bengali serial Bojhena Se Bojhena). However, no sooner the trailer was launched than the netizens lauded the awesome chemistry between Arjun and Madhumita.

Now, like Pratim’s all love tales, in Love Aaj Kal Porshu, the texture changes according to the episodes. As the director says, Love Aaj Kal Porshu is the timeless journey of discovering and rediscovering love – the emotion that connects two people today, tomorrow and forever. “Three Stories. Two Souls. One Emotion. Love Aaj Kal Porshu will serve the perfect concoction to celebrate Valentine’s Day,” says Pratim at the trailer launch of the film in Kolkata.
By now, Nikhita Gandhi and Dev Arijit’s romantic number Shune Ne is already a chartbuster. And with Pratim himself being a great fan of Imtiaz Ali, we are eager to find out how he dishes out his Bengali V-Day offer, Love Aaj Kal Porshu alongside Bollywood’s favourite Love Aaj Kal. Tough competition must say.
