AGENCIES, Lucknow: Sometimes extreme situations demand extreme measures. But if it has to be done, then do it in a humanely way. Well, a group of migrant labourers were meted out a treatment that puts humanity to a shame.
An angry Samajwadi Party president Akhilesh Yadav on Monday targeted the Yogi Adityanath government over spraying a group of migrants on their back home with “chemicals” to sanitise them in Bareilly.
In a shocking incident, workers belonging to the Bareilly administration sprayed sanitiser and disinfectants on a group of migrants workers before allowing them to enter the district. The act was uploaded on social media which was promptly responded with disgust. Netizens contended that act of this barbaric forced public bathing was in complete violation of the consent and rights of the workers.
In the videos doing the rounds on the net, Bareilly administration officials can be seen clothed in protective gear spraying a chemical sanitizer solution on the migrant families including women and children. The defenceless victims are seen clutching on to their luggage and sitting quietly on the road as they are forcefully showered.
After the incident, several of them including women and children complained of burning sensation in their eyes. They are also worried about the after effects of the chemicals on young children. Some have even questioned as to what chemical was sprayed on them.
Ashok Gautam, the nodal officer in charge of Bareilly’s coronavirus response operations, confirmed to media that the migrants were indeed sprayed with a mixture of sanitiser mixed with water and chlorine and sprayed the incoming workers to eradicate all signs of the virus from their person. He further justified that getting them wet was not a problem as long as the disease was contained.
“Who are you trying to kill, Corona or humans?” a journalist wrote on Twitter while sharing the video. Another user called the act “dehumanising”.
District magistrate Nitish Kumar has since admitted to the “mistake” and attributed it to the “over-active” civic bodies personnel.
