RAHUL ADHIKARI, Kolkata: Belying all hopes of a good showing riding on the growing popularity of the BJP, the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyathi Parishad (ABVP), the student’s wing of the party, drew a blank at the Jadavpur University (JU) students’ union polls.
The Left retained its hold over the Arts faculty with the SFI winning all the four positions. Independents bagged all positions in the Engineering and Science faculties.
The Arts faculty has been the hotbed of student agitations with the SFI in the forefront. From the gherao of Union minister Babul Supriyo to blocking the entry of Governor Jegdeep Dhankar into the campus for the convocation, the students’ wing of the CPI(M) has been criticised many a times in the past.
As newly elected general-secretary of the Arts faculty Subhayan Acharya Majumdar said, “On September 19, after students gheraoed Babul Supriyo, ABVP marched into our campus and vandalised our classrooms, union room and brunt down whatever they could lay their hands on. Union polls didn’t happen for the last three years during which the scenario of the campus changed. We were little sceptical about that. What is Jadavpur University famous for? Democracy, and freedom of speech where one could freely air dissent. That is under threat.”
“Why just look at Jadavpur? We are ruling Delhi University. And ABVP doesn’t have any links with the BJP, we are part of the RSS. We have just begun our journey in JU and I am sure we will improve our showing,” said the ABVP’s Subhadip Karmakar.
