BH Correspondent, Kolkata: The Kolkata cops have identified 53 Muslim preachers, including 39 foreigners, who had returned to Kolkata after attending a religious gathering in Delhi’s Nizamuddin last week. All of them have been sent to a quarantine facility near the airport.
The Union Home Ministry had alerted the state government about 76 people who had attended the religious in Delhi and were potential coronavirus carriers. In fact, many of them had tested coronavirus positive the state home department asked the police to identify them as early as possible.
A special team comprising officers from the detective department, security control and special branch started looking for these preachers in the city. The police team tracked 13 of them at a religious place near Narkeldanga. All of them had come to Kolkata from Thailand. They told the police that after reaching Kolkata, the were held back due to the lockdown.
The police team found other group of13 preachers at a mosque in the Jorasanko area. They had come from Myanmar. Later, the cops managed to locate another group at a religious place in Garden Reach area. There were 13 preachers in this group — nine from Malaysia and four from Indonesia. The police have also traced 4 preachers who had come from Delhi and were staying at a hotel in the New Market area.
The police also found ten others who had gone to Delhi from Kolkata acting as the guide of these foreigners. All of them have been quarantined at the Haz House in Rajarhat.
The cops are now looking for another group of 23 who had attended the religious gathering in Delhi. “We have identified them as they had registered their entry with our Regional Foreigners’ Registration office after they landed in Kolkata before going to Delhi,” said an officer with security control.
